connecting camcorder to pc (slightly ot)

Hi

A guy at work has recently bought a digital camcorder and was asking me
about firewire connections (I know the general consensus is that its the
best way to connect).

His camera connects via the USB lead to a socket on the camera which is what
seems to be the standard USB connection. We have 3 digital cameras and 3
MP3 players (different brands) and all use this same small plug to connect
to the USB.

My camera (Canon) is a few years old and uses the dv connection found on the
end of the standard firewire cable, is this not used anymore, is the USB
type small plug now the standard on new digital camcorders?

thanks

My fairly recent Panasonic PV-GS19 inexpensive camcorder [tape] has both.

Lots of camcorders have USB now, some for downloading the stills/video from
the sd card, some say you can use it for capturing video - which for some
does work.
Also depending on the type of cam, ones like dvd/hdd only use USB, as they
don't record ina firewire compatible format - ie Mpeg.
What make and model cam is it?
