Connecting an HP ScanJet 3200C

I'm trying to hook up a ScanJet 3200C to my IBM laptop loaded with Windows
XP. I downloaded the PrescisionScan LT driver from HP's site. My computer
does not recognize the scanner. I checked all the cords, and everything seems
to be plugged in. I restarted my computer, but no luck. The ReadMe info with
the driver states the following:

"The pass through parallel port on the scanner is intended to be used
only with printers. If you have another parallel device that is not a
printer connected to your parallel port, you should add another
parallel port to your computer before installing the scanner. Connect
either your other parallel device or the scanner to the second
parallel port. Call your computer manufacturer for details on how to
add an additional parallel port to your computer."

I'm not exactly sure how to interpret that. I don't have a printer. Both
ends of my parallel port cable are male ends. My computer has one 25-pin
female outlet, and my scanner has two 25-pin outlets: one male and one
female. Do I need to plug a parallel cable into the scanner's male outlet
instead of the female outlet? Or is it something else entirely?

1. See this link for more

That's the driver that I installed. Got it from HP's site.
2. Look carefully at the markings on the 2 ports in the back of the
scanner as to which is to be used. I would presume the male connection,
The female connection has a printer icon next to it, and the male connection
has a monitor icon next to it. Does this mean that I should use the male
connection? I thought I could use 25-pin ports for anything, but maybe I'm
mistaken. Sorry if I'm showing my ignorance in computer technology.

If properly connected as per the instructions, and no success, I would
look and see what the BIOS setting for the LPT port was set to. ECP, EPP
, Bi-directional. ECP is preferred, but try changing the setting. Also
to ensure you have the LPT port set up in Device manager. I generally
have best luck setting it to use interrupt for port.
