Connecting a desktop with a laptop

Hello.
I have a desktop running XP pro and a laptop running XP home.
Some time ago I bought a crossover cable and connected the two and then I
could share the internet connection without problems.
Now for some reason I have a problem. When the cable is placed between the
two machines my desktop freezes and nothing on it will function. The laptop
works fine but cannot 'see' the desktop.
I have looked at the IP settings and rather than leave them as automatic I
changed them to the IP value of the desktop with the last digit changed from
1 to 2. Did not work. Same result. So everything has been put back to
automatic.

Can anyone please advise me on what I should be doing to get this working?

Thank you in advance.

Hello Luke.

Thanks for your help.

I am now a little further forward with this.
By disabling Norton firewall I was able to stop the computer freezing. I
could then enable it and it seems to be working OK.
However I cannot get the laptop connected to the internet. I have followed
microsofts instructions about testing the connection using the ping function
and the two computers 'see' each other (after I set the IP address's as 1
and 2).
So all I have to work on now is how to get the laptop to be connected to the
internet. I have to think this is something simple. I am still reading the
web page you sent me to, hopefully I will understand it.

Thanks

Steve

Spoke too soon, just after posting the last message the PC froze up again.
Looks like the firewall is the culprit.
Just got to get the internet sorted now.

Hi Steve,
Thanks for the update. Well done on fixing the first
issue! With regards to the internet problem could you
please tell me exactly what the problem is (ie. does the
laptop show a 'page cannot be displayed error' in IE. I
will try and do some research on the matter. In the
meantime once again could you please read the ICS
troubleshooting article at:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;308021

Let me know how you get on, Luke.

Hi Luke.

Yes I get a 'page cannot be displayed' message.
I will continue to read the microsoft help page.
Thanks
Steve

Back to square one.
With Norton disabled started freezing again.
One other factor that has just occurred to me.
A few weeks back I hooked up my friends PC to mine using the crossover
cable. Everything worked fine and as it should.
The detective in me therefore deduces that the laptop is the cause of the
freezing, but why?
Frustration is setting in and I am no nearer solving this.
I have read the microsoft web page but it does not offer a solution that
will work.
Anyone any thoughts as to how to solve this.

Thanks

Hi Luke.

No, it goes into the lan socket of each computer.

Steve

Hi Steve,
I'm just dealing with a server disaster at the
moment. Will get back to you shortly. In the meantime
when the computer starts to hang could you take a look
for a error message in event viewer that occured when the
PC started to hang (Control Panel > Performance &
Maintenance > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer). Could
you send me the details for the error (most importantly
the 'event ID' and the 'source'.
Thanks for the reply, Luke.

Hello Luke
Sorry for the delay in replying, I have been working away for a couple of days.

I am not sure which part you want.
For example I connected my laptop just now and my PC froze. I looked in the event log and found several items. Some are information and I can see when I plugged the laptop in and some are error messages. I have copied what I can from the first of those error messages.

Date: 03/07/2004 Source: ipnathlp
Time 08:37:24 Category: None
Type: Error Event ID: 32003

In Description:
The Network Address Translator (NAT) was unable to request an operation of the kernel-mode translation module. This may indicate misconfiguration, insufficient resources, or an internal error. The data is the error code.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Hope this helps and thanks
