connect 2 machines

I have two stand alone machines both running XP professional. I want to
send files from one machine to the other and vis versa. I have connected a
crossover cable and I understand the connection to be working fine. I used
the wizard to make the network connection but cannot 'see' the opposite
machine directory on either computer. I am sure this is a simple job to do
but I am too stupid to see the error. Can anyone walk me through this one?

TIA

Charlie

Are you sharing any files on either machine? You can only see "shared
files".

Can you ping the other computer? If you can, then did you share
something? Computers can't advertise a share if they aren't doing so.

Thanks. I didn't know that. I thought shared folders referred to different
account users on one machine, I will give it a go.

1. Both boxes must be set to the same workgroup.
2. Both boxes must have identical user accounts on them with
identical non-blank passwords.
3. You must "share" something on one or both boxes to see anything
after #1 and #2 are completed.
