Confused by Licensing (Again)

Bob R

We have a Windows 2000 Server setup as a Domain Controller. We have a
Member Server running an accounting application that needs to be accessed by
remote clients (mostly Win2K and XP). That server is now in Remote Admin
mode and I would like to change it to Application mode so more users can
access it remotely.

I understand that Win2K and XP clients do not need a Terminal Services
license, but they do need a TS CAL to be able to access the main server. Is
this correct? Do I need to setup a TS Licensing Server on the DC or the
Member Server? Licensing is already setup on the DC I believe.

Are there any other licences that I need for remote users to be able to get
to the member server via Term Services?

Well you're 0 for 3 but that's okay, we'll point you in the right direction.

1. TSCAL, TSLicense, same thing as far as you need to be concerned.
2. Even if you have 100% Windows 2000+ clients connecting to yout TS, you still need a TS License Server to grant those computers grace connections to your TS.
3. You can't (or shouldn't) just switch your server in Remote Administration Mode to Application Server Mode unless you want your applications to start exhibiting crazy errors( Windows will evern warn you if you try to do this). Remote Administration Mode is meant for just what the name implies, Administration, NOT running end-user applications, and doesn't use a TS License Server. If you installed an end-user application on the TS while in RA Mode it'll need to be uninstalled -> Put TS in Application Server Mode -> Reinstall application(s). This goes for ANY application that multiple users could be running simultaneously
4. In a 2000 AD Domain the TSLS needs to be on the Domain Controller. You don't need any TSCALs if every connection is 2000+

If you have on licensing server on the DC and you have
clients connecting to another member server in the same
domain that is setup as a TS application server -- where
do you view the certificates that are being granted?

I can't see them anywhere for the users that are logging
into the TS on the member server?
Is something incorrectly configured?
Many thanks
