conflict with MBAM and AVG

R

there is a major conflict with Malwarebytes and AVG Internet Security only
AVG thinks MBAM is a threat and has removed it from add/remove programs and
doesn't allow you to redownload it to reinstall it either

I saw this on my computer and 6 clients that are running AVG Internet
Security
I emailed tech support at AVG and they are working on a fix
I went to mbam's forum and explained what happened and they told me to do
this fix so I am passing it on to anyone here that has both programs
AGAIN it is only doing this in AVG Internet Security
It is not doing it (so far anyway) in AVG Free and AVG Pro- I tested it on
my other machines that are running both AVG Programs

You first need to report it to AVG, then add these files to the exclusion
list:
Right-click the AVG icon in the system tray.
On the shortcut menu select Launch Control Center.
Click the 'Tools' tab, select Advanced settings...'
Scroll down or select 'Exceptions'
Click 'Add List' and copy and paste the following list of

files:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\mbam.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\mbamswissarmy.sys
C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe
C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam-setup.exe
Click OK 3 times.
Reboot your PC.

This fix does work because I did this on 6 computers with no problems but
avg still needs to fix it so it doesn't happen again

I put this here so if anyone else has a problem and do not go to
malwarebytes forum they would know what to do
If you go to the malwarebytes forum you will see all my posts in there
I am via email working with AVg to correct it
We are here still an information software newgroup not just for WD

Windows Defender News may have depreciated to somewhat of a chat room.
Many MS NG's have become that way. That's fine by me, but at least post your
OT Topics OT ! I will since I like to visit here as much as you do but hesitate when
a thread degenerates to something completely off topic from the original OT Thread.

Then perhaps you might also remind the folks who persistently post
"news" about their various anti-spyware products in this newsgroup.

Randy,

At least this time you are RIGHT

I was losing all hope

Look around, a see how many helpers, stay a way from Windows Defender NG's,
look the others 6 newsgroup, how many posters in this group seldom offer any
help, even Jack Ass show once in a while offering the correct help. ;-)

Some people are abusing Bill generosity, it is sad to use this newsgroup
only to feed there ego

Where is Mr Cat, Plun, Dave M, Tom Emmelot and many more, etc etc

OOhh ooHH,

this one is an announcement one only
those who need help go to the general one related to WD
since it is boring in here just posting updates to WD we all have made post
in here including you Randy, about Spyware Search and Destroy updates,
spywareblaster, superantispyware, even other antivirus programs and other
antispyware programs as well as Microsoft updates and microsoft's new
antivirus program. We never questioned any of those updates so why do it
now.
this newsgroup is still about spyware announcements, why does it matter
which ones and if it can help others in here, I think that is a plus not a
minus

From now _forward_ unless *my* posts are WD Related, the will have [OT] Off Topic Clearly Marked,
in the Subject Line.

End of topic for me.

Absolutely invaluable information! Robin, your posting this here has given
me the opportunity of NOT updating mbam, and thereby not having to get
involved with this at all until AVG have sorted it out. Thank you.

(Not sure what the grumbles are about - folks have always posted this sort
of information here, and very helpful it is too.)

I'm not in any way in charge of this group. Microsoft is, but they are a
very lenient parent--unless we step even further out of line than Jack Ass
has, we are tolerated.

I don't see the Off Topic traffic here as getting in the way of the intended
support purposes for these groups.

One could read Robin's chosen subject header and wonder whether the conflict
was between Windows Defender and one or both of the named vendors.

Randy has stated his case for labeling such posts more clearly.

Neither of us is "in charge"--how we behave here is up to all of us, and new
folks reading should be able to look at the work of the regulars here and
get a feel for the behaviors we tolerate.

I've a more than sneaking suspicion that these groups are sort of a lost
remnant, and that they might disappear--especially the NNTP access to them,
at any moment, given the trends in the outside world.

But for now, lets try to keep the content relevant, the discourse civil, and
attractive to anybody who wanders in looking for help.

Each participant in this thread, in their own way, has that goal, I think.

btw since I know you have AVG Internet Security, AVG is going to issue an
update to the AIP. That is what seems to be the problem.
Until they do you could follow my suggestion and put all that info in the
add list and also in AIP put in Settings/Allowed- ADD Mbam-setup.exe
This way until AVG gets around to doing the update- the update is in AIP
also, you will have the ability to open and use MBAM

Bill it will be interesting when Microsoft Essentials comes out of beta and
it disabled WD. I am betting more people will use it since it is a good
product so far and is free, and you are right if this happens this newsgroup
will quietly disappear. It would be a shame because of the other useful info
that I posted in here besides WD.

Hello Robin:

This entire thread was quite worthy of cross post to the malware
newsgroups. Thank you for all the information.

Well Done.

End of topic for me.

Given how often notice of updates to Firefox, SAS, Spyware Blaster,
AVG, etc. have been posted here, even when not security updates (FF),
it's hard to see Robin's post as out of line or yours henceforth needing
any special markings. Being primarily an Opera user, I was initially
annoyed about the constant FF notices, given the title of the group,
but came around after awhile to appreciate its low-key democratic,
helpful and very friendly and supportive nature.

Thanks for this Robin. Actually, I never got around to installing the AIP
component (I expected it to come through as an automatic update but it never
did, and then I forgot all about its existence until now).

So as long as I continue NOT to have AIP installed, it looks like the MBAM
problem won't affect me anyway.
Cheers,
Alan

Afterthought - given the havoc that it's created over this MBAM business,
I'm not sure I want the API, really. I certainly don't want ANY security
software removing files without asking me first (I have all those 'automatic
heal' options unchecked).

I haven't given much thought as yet about what to do on my W2K system
if/when WD goes away.

I have every expectation that Windows Defender will continue to be available
for any OS for which it was ever available.
