Configuring for Multiboot: XP and 98

I have a new HP Pavillion PC, which came with Windows XP Home factory installed (on the D: partition of the hard drive). I want to set up for booting to Windows 98, when needed, to run some of my old hardware or software (that is not supported in XP). I have been told by the HP support desk that what I want to do is only possible if I have the 'full Windows XP CD-ROM set' (which was not provided with my system), that the factory-installed XP is limited and cannot be used to get where I want to go. Is this true? Have I been hosed such that I've got to put out the complete price of a new copy of Windows XP Home in order to set up dual booting capability on my system? In any event I'd appreciate any procedural guidance that would reduce the pain of going through this reconfiguration as much as possible.

The Pavilion has it's recovery disk assigned to Drive C, &
Windows is on Drive D: (HP has totally lost any technical
savvy in their product line).

Because the HP has the System Partition formatted with NTFS,
you can't install Win98 to it. Your only option would be to
get a copy of PQMagic or BootITng and convert the drive
(D:) to FAT32, resize it - Then use the unallocated space
for a new FAT32 partition to install Win98. Not a simple
process but it can be done.

Hi

You might get something out of this one:

How do I install Windows 98/Me after I've installed XP?

Hi,

Even with a full version, you will need third-party help in the form of
partitioning software since WinXP is already installed. You need to:

1) Shrink the existing NTFS partition and make room for a FAT32 one. Then
create and format it.

2) Use a boot manager, as Win98 cannot boot from an NTFS partition.

Boot Managers and Partitioning programs:

BootIT NG www.terabyteunlimited.com
Partition Magic www.powerquest.com/partitionmagic
Partition Commander http://www.v-com.com/product/pc_ind.html
Ranish Partition Manager http://www.ranish.com/part/
