computor is very slow

my computor is slow and getteing slower,i have deleted the cookies and uninstalled mcfee security.i am on windows 2000 professional.also are them downloads for speeding up your computor any good as this is driving me nuts.any advice at all would be very grateful,thanks. annette (e-mail address removed)
