I have a laptop with XP connecting fine to a wireless router through a
pc card. I have a desktop with 98se connecting to the router fine by
Ethernet. Both connect to the wireless router OK and to the Internet
fine.

I am having trouble getting the two computers to see each other so I
can access files and drives from one when on another and vice versa.
Any thoughts?

On the WinXP PC, create local user account(s), with non-blank
password(s), that have the desired access privileges to the desired
shares. Log on to the other PCs using those account(s), and you will
be able to access the designated shares, provided your network is
configured properly. On the Win9x machines, make sure File and Print
Sharing is enabled. Make sure that all three computers are using the
same networking protocol and are on the same subnet.

Usually, WinXP's Networking Wizard makes it simple and painless --
almost entirely automatic, in fact. There's a lot of useful,
easy-to-follow information in WinXP's Help & Support files, and here:

The XP firewall could be part of the problem. Try disabling it as your
router should be doing it's work.

It can take a few minutes before the computers see each other when first
hooked up as well. Sometimes 15-20 minutes I hear....

You won't "see" each other until you "share" files. After you share a folder
on each computer you might have to reboot a couple of times. Don't know why
but worked for me.

Couple things. I don't know that the network is setup properly. There
are only two computers, the third device on the inside is the wireless
router, the fourth of course is hte DSL modem. I haven't manually
entered any subnets but I'm seeing the same private IP scheme with the
exception of an alternate private IP scheme now and then. THe DSL
modem is using 10.0.0.1. The wireless router and laptop are using
192.168 etc. and I think that this gave a similar IP to the desktop
that used to be 10.0.0.2 but is now 192.168.0.3. That assumes that the
router is .0.1 and the laptop is .0.2. Since IP addresses are
automatically assigned and a lot of this networking is automated, I
haven't tried to manually insert any IP addresses, subnets or
otherwise. As it's been a while I'm a little hazy on what I need to
put in where and what I don't need to bother with. There are an awful
lot of networking adapters and TCPIP adapters in network neighborhood
these days. When I tried to set it up so they could see each other
before, it added some kind of network bridge in the laptop's NN or
network places and then I couldn't connect the laptop wirelessly at
all.

Now what if I want to share the entire C drive, the CD drive and the
floppy A drive so I have access to everything?
