Computers not visible

I have 2 machines running XP. They are connected to the internet thru a hub.
Both machines can access the internet and they can ping each other but ONLY
if my ADSL connection is plugged in. Both have unique names and both are in
the same workgroup but neither can see each other on the network. Ay ideas?
