DLink DSL302G problem - repost

P

Pat Garard

G'Day All,

I am assisting my daughter who has 2 computers connected to a
DLink DSL302G ADSL Modem:

A. Older Desktop (Win Xp Pro NO SP) via USB [10.1.1.4]
B. New Notebook (Win Xp Pro SP2) via Ethernet [10.1.1.5]

Both can now access the internet.

This is a supported configuration and File/Printer Sharing should be
possible using the 10.1.1.x addresses supplied by the modem.

File and Printer Sharing have been *manually* enabled on both
machines. Drive C is shared on each machine

The machines have unique names and the *same* workgroup.

On machine A (Older/No SP) I can:
ping 10.1.1.5 successfully
See m/c B in Network Places/View Workgroup Computers
(but it is "inaccessible")

On machine B (New/SP2):
I ping 10.1.1.4 WITHOUT success (timeout)
If I try to open Network Places/View Workgroup computers,
there is a message:
"CorrectWGName" is inaccessible...administrator...privilege..."

Any insights would be much appreciated!

Make sure that any firewall programs (Norton, McAfee, ZoneAlarm,
PC-cillin, etc) are configured to allow access by other computers on
the local area network. Note that some recent antivirus programs,
such as Norton Antivirus 2006, include firewall functions.

Hi Steve,

Thanks ...

When I'm next round there, I'll do an "assay" of A-Virus/Firewall
activity and post back.
