Connecting 2 PCs over wireless hub

I've got both laptops connecting to the internet via the Philips
SNA6500 wireless hub, they are both on the same workgroup, but they
can't see each other - they can't even ping each other by IP address.
I've looked all through the router config pages and can't see anything
that explicitly allows or denies machines from seeing each other. Any
ideas what sort of thing I should be looking for?

First, Phil, they need to be ine the same workgroup and you will need
to have file sharing activated. Secondly, most likely one (or both)
firewalls are blocking the connection. Since you are safely behind a
router, try turning them off and then connecting or pinging.
Sometimes you will ping but the computer itself will be down a layer
or two under Microsoft Networks in Network Neighborhood (or whatever
they're calling it these days) and not easily seen.

Once you get connection you can re-activate and configure the
firewalls.

Yes, it was in fact a combination of file sharing and firewalls. I
configured my firewall and it worked one way, then turned on file
sharing on my dad's and then it worked the other way too.

Yes, we had a bit of a think about this and came to the conclusion
that the router would not, by default, route incoming connnections to
either of the computers and so the firewall could be safely turned of
for testing purposes.
