Computer won't turn off

I'm working on a HP Pavilion zt1000 series laptop. I am running of
Windows XP and have recently installed McAfee onto the computer since
Norton would not install correctly. The problem I have is that the
computer will not turn off. I have tried to turn it off through the
task bar and though ctrl+alt+delete. What happens is: it goes to the
Windows is Shutting Down and will stay at that screen for over 12
hours. The only way we have figured out to shut it down is to press
the power button and do a hard turn-off. We have updated the cd
driver, which could have been a cause. After the update, we are able
to restart the computer, but we still cannot turn it off. Please help!

On Win9x a corrupt logow.sys or logos.sys (actually bitmaps) would cause
a hang like this. Maybe XP has a similar thing. Have you tried the Microsoft
knowledge base?
