Hi Bobbi
We need to replace the file (shdocvw.dll). I recommend attempting this by
booting your computer to the blank desktop you see and then follow these
steps. Note, stop following the steps when the problem has been resolved.
PHASE 1:
1) Open up the Windows Task Manager.(Press Ctrl+Alt+Del).
2) Try to run System File Checker (If it runs then it will manage the
system files itself)
3) Click on New Task and in the Create New Task box type "cmd" <without
quotes>.
4) In the command prompt type "sfc /scannow" <without quotes> and hit ENTER.
5) The System File Checker will check and replace the files.
If you get the following error the proceed to phase 2.
ERROR: Windows File Protection cannot be started as the RPC server is
unavailable.
Error Code 0x000006BA
PHASE 2:
1) NOTE: Put in the Windows XP Disk.
2) Open up the Task Manager (Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete.)
3) On the Applications Tab - Click on New Task.
4) In the Open box type "expand <cd-drive>:\i386\shdocvw.dl_
c:\Windows\System32\shdocvw.dll"
5) If you do not know the drive letter then click on Browse button.
6) On the left hand side click on the "My Computer" button.
7) You will see the CD-ROM drive and you can note down the drive letter.
8) If you do not have the Windows Xp disk then go to PHASE 3.
PHASE 3:
1) Open up the task Manager.(Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete).
2) Click on New Task.
3) In the Open box typed "copy C:\Windows\System32\Dllcache\shdocvw.dll
c:\Windows\System32\shdocvw.dll"
4) Restart your computer.
PHASE 5:
1) Boot to the Blank Desktop.
2.) At the blank desktop press control + Alt + Delete to bring up the task
manager
3.) In task manager click on File and then New Task,
4) Type in msconfig <enter>
5.) Launch system restore restore back to prior time when the system was
operational.
You should be able to boot into desktop and you will able to boot into the
desktop.

| Subject: Computer won't restart - icons will not display

| I have Windows XP.
|
| After downloading Microsoft updates last night (hot
| fixes), after I re-started my computer, my desktop icons
| did not load, and there is no task bar so I cannot access
| anything on my computer.
|
| I receive this message as it starts up:
|
| "explorer.exe - unable to locate component.
|
| This application has failed to start because SHDOCVW.DLL
| was not found. Re-installing the application my fix the
| problem."
|
| We tried using the setup menu and set Boot order to read
| the CD first and I put in my XP CD. It still just tries to
| restart the normal way and does not complete.
|
| What else can I try???
