My computer decided to suddenly reboot itself last night, and ever since then
windows just will not boot. When i try and start in normal mode I get the
windows splash screen and the little bar under the logo goes about one and a
half times then it just reboots itself again, when i try and start in safe
mode, I see the files its loading then the last one its gets to is
AGP440.sys, then restarts. i just can not get into windows.

Hopeing for an option aside from reformat but if its all i got then will do
it.

Sorry ... you need to boot from the Windows XP installation disk.
It will ask you if you want to run the Recovery Console, you will then enter
'R' (without quotes).
It will then ask for your Administrator password, then you will be able to
use listsvc.

hmm I;ve done all that, gotten into the recovery console, but never asked me
for an admin password, I've started teh console twice tonight and it never
did, I dont have any other accounts aside form my own on that comp, that
might be why. But I went down and tried the listsvc again and I still get
nothing, just gives me a fresh c:\> prompt

I've started the recovery console twice tonight and it never asked me for a
password, my account is the only one on teh comp and it has no password
associated to it, so that might be why.

I went dow and tried the listsvc command again and i still get nothing, just
a fresh c:\> prompt appears

You do have yor system setup to boot from the CDROM drive as first, correct?
Once you get into the Recovery COnsole, you will be prompted and you should
be at the prompt that looks like this:

C:\Windows>

When booting up, your screen should be blue with white lettering. ANd it
should say WIndows XP.
Just double checking ... because I rebooted my system, with the bootable CD
in the drive, to make sure.

Turn on the computer, when your keyboard lights (NUM LOCK, CAP LOCK, SCROLL
LOCK)
flash, start tapping the F8 key and it will boot to a black & white menu
screen.
When you get this screen, choose "Disable Automatic System Restart"
Now, reboot the computer and post back with the error screen results from
the STOP ERROR
That you should receive. Just need the error numbers and any file names such
as vtdisp.sys or another file name as your s might show.

I tried this and alls i got was a boot selector screen, but when I hit escape
to leave the menu I did get a "error loading OS" Message. This is the first
time I've seen this message.

Nero:

All that did was stop WIndows from keep restarting each time it has a STOP
error. LS wanted to know what the final driver was loaded prior to STOP.
You already know that. It's AGP440.SYS. All this will do is confirms this.

Since you disabled the auto-restart on error, now if you reboot and chose
Safe Mode, the system will put out the Driver's loaded screen, STOP and
remain in the blue screen. It will not reboot until you do it manually.

Did you check to see if CDROM is set to boot from first in your BIOS?

Did you try rebooting in Recovery Mode from the Windows XP Installation CD
and follow the instructions?

Alls i got was a boot selector screen when i hit F8 on boot, but whern i
start in safe mode the last file I see before it restarts itself is AGP440.sys

Nero,
didjn't ask the OP what the final driver loaded was! Better for you to read
the post & reply before jumping the keyboard.

So you've given up on booting from the Windows XP Installation disk, I take
it.

You still haven't answered question on making sure that the system is
booting from the CDROM first.
Since you can use F8, you are not following directions.

Set your system to boot from CDROM first (this is under the BIOS Boot option
settings)
Then put the Windows XP Installation disk in the CDROM drive
Then reboot
Choose 'R' for Recovery

Follow the remaining instructions for Administrator password that I have
post previously.

Has anyone tried selecting 'Last Known Good Configuration (your most
recent settings that worked)' from the F8 menu???? Sheesh! This
should've been the first thing to try. It sounds like a driver problem
though (agp440.sys).
Take a look at this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307852

And this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324764

Also, if you Google "agp440.sys" you'll see many, many people with the
same or similar problems:
http://www.computing.net/windows2000/wwwboard/forum/21602.html

Good luck,
HJS

PS Please Post the fix!

Thx
