every so often my computer will stop responding i never
had this problem with any of the other windows does
anyone what might be causing this problem

I think that I may be having the same problem as Luke. I
can boot XP and open some program, and usually not have a
problem. However, intermittently when I close a program
XP will almost freeze up. The same will most often happen
when I go to the control panel by pressing Start. When I
close it, XP will freeze.

At this point, I will not be able to open any other
programs. I won't even be able to turn off my computer by
clicking the start button. However, my curser will still
be able to move around the screen.

If I press Ctr Alt Del I may not see any files listed
as "not responding". However, if I shut down manually by
pressing the power button, I will usually see two
programs "not responding". The first is cftmon.exe and
the other is explorer.exe. However, there may be others,
but these two are always there.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Phillip,
CTFMon is involved with the language/alternative input services in Office
XP. CTFMON.exe will continue to put itself back into MSConfig when you run
the Office XP apps as long as the Text Services and Speech applets in the
Control Panel are enabled. Not required if you don't need these features.
OFFXP: What Is CTFMON and What Does It Do?

As for Explorer.exe while in the Task Manager, end the process on
explorer.exe then go to File/New Task (Run) and type in: explorer.exe

when i looked through the rest of the message board i
found out that if you go to the start menu and then run
and type in eventvwr.msc you can read your pc logs on
doing this i found an error which had been occuring
everytime my pc froze this error said
"AMLI: ACPI BIOS is attempting to read from an illegal IO
port address (0x71), which lies in the 0x70 - 0x71
protected address range. This could lead to system
instability. Please contact your system vendor for
technical assistance."

does anyone know how to stop this from happening

Kelly,

Thanks for your response. I had read the same thing
before. Therefore, after your response I went to
Alternative User Input and selected Not Available in both
Office XP Pro and Publisher 03.

Then I looked at Text Services/date, time,
Language,../Regional and Language
options/language/details and the only items listed were
English and the Keyboard.

Then I ran Regsvr32 /u on the Msimtf.dll and Msct.dll
files. When I closed the control panel it was locked up
again, and I rebooted closing both of the same non-
responding file again.

After it returned, I again visited the control panel
only to have it lock up again. Only this time the only
non-responding file was explorer.exe.

Any ideas?

Phillip

Phillip,

I am not following you here as I don't know exactly why you are doing what
you have without further explanation for all three paragraphs.
