Hi all
I hope someone can help me. Some times ago I noticed my computer would get
stuck on the XP screen. At first it was not a big deal since it would
happen very infrequently and I was able to get it working by turning it off
and onn back again. Never a problem the second time.

Since last week, things took a turn for the worse. It get stuck as usual,
but it does not work on the next reboot, nor the next, nor the next . Now it
never works no matter what I do. It just get stuck at that screen.

It also WILL NOT GO INTO SAFE MODE

I did try a few things like trying to re-install from my original XP CD and
get the message:

APVXDWIN.EXE - Corrupt File
The file or directory \WINNT\System32\Drivers\ComFiltr.sys is corrupt &
unreadable. Please run CHKDSK utility

Of course I cannot run the chkdsk utility, because I cannot get into safe
mode

Any help is appreciated, because I have mose essential applications on this
system that I need to be using urgently

Regards

After backup you can run
chkdsk /r
from the recovery console command line. (/r implies /f and /p)

To start the Recovery Console, start the computer from the Windows XP
CD-Rom. At the "Welcome to Setup" screen. Press F10 or R to repair a Windows
XP installation, and then press C to use the Recovery Console. The Recovery
Console then prompts you for the administrator password. If you do not have
the correct password, Recovery Console does not allow access to the
computer. If an incorrect password is entered three times, the Recovery
Console quits and restarts the computer. Note If the registry is corrupted
or missing or no valid installations are found, the Recovery Console starts
in the root of the startup volume without requiring a password. You cannot
access any folders, but you can carry out commands such as chkdsk, fixboot,
and fixmbr for limited disk repairs. Once the password has been validated,
you have full access to the Recovery Console, but limited access to the hard
disk. You can only access the following folders on your computer: drive
root, %systemroot% or %windir%

Hi Dave
I did according to instructions and was able to run the recovery console and
then CHKDSK /r. Initially I hah a problem because there was no administrator
account. But using ENTER did the trick. But when I started Windows again ---
same exact problem. Does not pass the XP screen (the one before you get to
login screen).

Also I forgot to mention that when it get stuck on the screen there are some
periodic hard drive activity and after about 5 minuted the Panda Anti-virus
icon appears on the right bottom of the screen and then the activity slow
down to a faint blink now and then. But if I let it stay on for a week,
still nothing!!

What do you think the next stem should be. Are there any utility to run from
the command line?

During chkdsk was anything fixed or errors found? If so you might also
download a disk diagnostic utility from the drive manufacturer's web site.

Also it's confusing that you tell us it stops before the logon window
appears but that you also see icons begin to populate the system try area
which you can't possibly see until sometime after logon has taken place.

Hi dave

Yes, CHKDSK found errors and fixed them
If so you might also
download a disk diagnostic utility from the drive >manufacturer's web
site.

Its a Compaq Presario 2100 laptop. I guess I will try their website for
utilities
Also it's confusing that you tell us it stops before the >logon window

This is kind of strange to me also. I may need to explain it better: The
computer does NOT boot to Windows. Thats a fact. There is a smaller
screen/window that usually comes up on top of the general screen before the
login screen. It says Microsoft Windows XP Professional. It is what hangs
there and does not go into the logon screen. It will hang their for several
minutes and then the Panda icon will appear on it; on the bottom right of
it. NOT on the general computer screen. Kind of eerie, I'll admit, but that
is what happens!

You might try running chkdsk again until it finds no errors.

You may need to pop the drive out to find out the manufacturer. If the drive
checks out OK then you might try the repair install again.

That is strange. I don't know what to tell you about that.
