If you have tried the usual steps, chekdisk, xp recovery console etc,
you might want to try the Repair Install, its basically a reinstall of
the OS, WITHOUT formating the hard drive, it will leave all your
program's and data on the disk however you will probably have to
repair/reinstall some of your apps as I believe it puts in a fresh Registry.

What happens when you try a regular boot?

You say "no screen", but it sounds like you are trying to boot in Safe
Mode and see things and the last thing you see is volsnap.sys?

Usually when Safe Mode hangs it is not the last thing you see that is
the problem -, it is what comes after it (and you can't see it).

(Folks that know how to fix the familiar Safe Mode boot stuck on
mup.sys know it is not really mup.sys that is the problem but what
comes after it..., but the first thing folks try to mess with is
mup.sys and that is not the problem at all).

We could figure out what comes after volsnap.sys and I know what it is
on my system, but it may not be the same on your system.

Describe the boot in normal mode and if you get a blue screen of
death, what does it say?

Do you have a genuine bootable XP installation CD? This is not the
same as recovery or repair CDs that may have come with a store bought
system,

How did you run chkdsk, verify boot.ini, etc. Are you booting the XP
Recovery Console?

Thanks I guess repair install would then require putting sp1 and sp3
but the real trouble is I cannot find my xp home install cd only xp
pro so
I would prefer some registry hives fix tool that can be put on a
bootable cd?
No screen you get(no BSOD!) when do not press F8.If you do and go into
safe mode it gets stuck, yes you are right, after volsnap(replacing
it did not help, nor replacing ntldr, ntdetect)
xp cd r.console enabled chkdisk checking and boot.ini with text
viewer.Boot sector or MBR boot code could be the problem (although
looked at part table and boot sector parameters visually with norton
disk editor and look ok) but hate to try fixmbr as it can ruin disk in
case of some hardware problem-how does one check MBR,BS first -guess
booting up to volsnap.sys indicates both are ok?
Where can one find the point where boot got stuck?(when you Enable
Bootlog in F8, you do not get updated info in windows\ntbtlog.txt!!)
