computer stays on

Hi,
I'm new to Xp Pro. and could use some help, before XP I had ME and every
thing was working fine, I formatted my hard drive and installed XP and my
hardware and software that I need. Now my computer stays on even after I
shut it down. Some of your thoughts maybe I have a Virus, but rest assure
that I don't I have the latest Ver. with the latest updates of Norton.
Please help!!!
