I have a computer that will power on for about 1 second and immediately power
off. I thought that it may have been the power supply so I removed one side
of the case of the case and saw that the light on the motherboard was on so I
know that it is getting power. I reseated all connections and tried to start
up again but it did the same thing. Any suggestions? The computer is running
XP home with 512mb ram.

You still might have a power supply issue, try another PSU. The "light on
the motherboard" really means it is getting power but you may not be getting
enough power when powering up.
