I have windows xp with sp-2. When I first turn computer on , The system tries to bypass the password protection & says that windows is starting but won't do anything.

How does it try to bypass the password protection (do you mean the main logon screen?)

Yes it is where you are supposed to inset your password to get to the start up window. It is where you put the user account passwords.

as mucks sugested try booting in safemode.

in safemode you will be presented with the familiar logon screen, where you should be able to logon with the default "administrator" account (assuming this hasn't been changed*) once logged in click start then run and type "control userpasswords2" from this dialogue box you have the option to disable autologon or require a password on logon.

Although this should stop windows automatically logging on there appears to be a issue with logging on full stop which you would need to investigate in safe mode.

* Always a good idea to change default admin account and select a complicated password.

**I like to set a BIOS password.... that way if a smart guy tries to reboot it..... they get no where.

I took Raje's suggestion & eliminated the windows user password. I still don't know what the problem is .But having the bios password makes it easier & a lot less headaches.
