Sometimes when I am using my computer it just restarts for no reason. I could be doing any task it is just at random. It has been doing this for a VERY long time now. I don't know when it started I just want it to stop. When I send an error report in Windows XP Home it says there is a device driver problem but all the drivers I can think of are good. It once said that there may have been a problem with the memory but the diagnostics cleared that thought up quick. All of my antivirus software is updated too. Please Help me soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks,
Brandon

Brandon,

Mmm, this is an interesting one, just to check you say
all you devices are OK, did you check this in Device
Manager?

Did you try and install some type of full system
benchmark / diagnostics tool like SANDRA Standard 2004??

That may be worth giving a go (you can get it from
www.download.com)

When the system is sending the error report did you look
at the detail of the report to help identify the issue?
Again this may provide some useful insight.

There are several possibilities, but I have found true random rebooting (if
you're certain that the machine is virus and spyware free and that memory is
ruled out) is most often related to overheating. Sometimes heat problems
may generate stop codes or error messages that seem to point to memory or
video.

Here are a few suggestions:

1. See if running the computer in Safe Mode follows the same pattern (to
help eliminate the device driver possibility).

2. Change a system setting as follows:
System Properties / Advanced Tab / Startup and Recovery Settings / Uncheck
the 'Automatically restart 'box under System Failure. This may cause you to
see a blue screen with a STOP Code on system failure. That code can be
helpful - post it here.

3. Open the case and see if your CPU cooling fan and heat sink fins and the
power supply air vents are clogged with dust. If so, blow out with
compressed air. Also, running the computer for a time with the case open
and seeing improvement can help verify a heat problem. (Some systems have
heat monitoring capabilities and alarms configurable in the BIOS which can
be helpful as well.)

Stop Code 0X0000007E (SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED) with a first
parameter of 0xc0000005 indicates a memory access violation in a system
process. This kind of error can be quite difficult to pin down. It can be
a driver conflict - look particularly at the video driver. I also still
advise checking re. possible heat problems.

Look at the troubleshooting tips in
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=330182 (Never mind that the
title references new XP upgrades - it has good general advice).

I did number two and I found the stop code. It is Stop: 0X0000007E
(0xc0000005, 0x80533fd4, 0xf78e6c20, 0xf78e6920). I also tried the
benchmark/diagnostic things and there was no problem.

That doesn't help much in narrowing things down. A quick bit of research
finds that BCCode: 10000050 often goes with the kind of Stop error you're
getting and often relates to obscure hardware or device driver problems.
Some have found things like fixing bad RAM, updating chipset drivers (mainly
for VIA chipsets), BIOS updates, or fixing overheating issues to be
solutions.

(Some of the information you see in these kinds of error codes and some of
stop error parameters relate to memory addresses that could, in theory, be
used with a debugger on your machine to try to identify a specific driver or
device failure. This is extremely complex though, and not usually
practical.)
