I have a computer that is rebooting immediately after I
login to Windows. What can I do to repair this? Thanks!

Hi, Collin.

How long is "immediately"? An hour? A minute? A second? Less? And do
you actually log in? As the Administrator or as another User? Or does
WinXP usually just start without showing the log in screen?

We can't see your computer, so we don't anything you don't tell us about it.
Tell us exactly the steps you take and what you see - and at what point it
reboots.

Can you boot into Safe Mode?

Have you checked out Jim Eshelman's web site? It's the starting point for
this kind of problem:

R.C., first off, I appreciate the help!

The computer will start up as it normally would. The WinXP
login screen will show, along with my user name (only one
user name, so I guess it would also be the admin), where I
then type in my password and press enter. The computer
will restart shortly after pressing enter or the desktop
will appear for a few seconds and then restart.

I haven't tried booting into safe mode, yet. I had to go
to work shortly after I found out there was a problem and
posted this.

I had a problem with WinXP a couple of days ago, where
WinXP wouldn't start up and it gave me an error message
saying there was a file missing or corrupt in the system
directory. I thought I had fixed it with my CD (the
computer started up just fine and I was able to use it).
But after shutting it down and starting it back up today,
the restart problem began.

Hope that's enough information. Thanks again!

Here's an update. I tried entering into Safe Mode with no
luck, but then attempted to load WinXP with the last known
good configuration. That seemed to work, as I was able to
login without it restarting. I've got Norton running right
now to see if it could possibly detect a virus.

More information would be appreciated.

One more update. :)

After running the virus scan, 8 files were infected with a
trojan virus. I'm not sure if these had anything to do
with my problem, but I'll post again if the problem
persists.
