I have a notebook that is only about 6 months old and was
working great, but about 2 weeks ago I used disk
defragmenter and the next time I turned my computer on, my
internet and a few videogames didn't work. The internet
connected through but right after it said logged on, it
just shut. I called AOL and Compaq but they couldn't
help. I tried System Restore and it wouldn't restore. I
uninstalled AOL and tried my other internet, but it still
didn't work. I was about to put in my 4 restore disks
that would restore my computer to its default but I would
lose everything. I was wondering if you could think of
something before I restore it. Thanks

Has all the earmarks of a "Dirty Volume". Your disk has
errors (Crosslinked files, etc). Click Start, Run (type)
Chkdsk C: \R
Answer No to forced dismount, and Yes to check on
the next boot. Reboot PC. Chkdsk will take ~30 Min
on a recent/large drive. Afterwards, try your apps -
But depending on what you've tried to do there may be
some things that have been damaged/altered by the
attempts to repair.

If it is only 6 months old, return the unit. Back up your
personal data if you are able. Then hold the seller responsible
for your data.

Hi, Joe.

I'm afraid I can't agree with Frank. The chances are the supplier's warranty
does not cover lost data when it is a software problem. Even when it's
hardware it can be very iffy!

That said, it sounds a bit like you have a virus - hellava coincidence, I
know!

Have you run a virus check. Don't forget to look in Task Manager and see if
you can see anything running that should not be. As you can't get onto the
internet to go to the likes of Symantec.com for a scan, you might want to
try this...

Go to Start/Run and enter service.msc. Hit OK. Scroll down to Remote
Procedure Call and disable it. (Not Locator). If you still have problems, go
to Control Panel/System and select the Advanced tab, then "Start up and
Recovery" Click Settings and disable "Automatically restart".

Hopefully you should be able to get online.

If you go ahead with this, remember to put everything back when you've done.

Good luck,

Ed
