Computer name change questions

Hi! Are there any known problems which occur when the name of the computer is
changed? For instance, in the "computer name change" screen there is a
warning saying that "changes may affect access to network resources." What
does this mean?

I am using a single computer, there is no network. Would the name change
effect the internet connection? There is an ADSL connection.

If I notice any problems, would system recovery to an earlier date solve it?

And can I use single-letter names? Would that conflict with the drive names?

Thanks for answers

Hi,
This will not affect your internet settings in any way. Changing this
setting would only affect you if you were on a LAN (local area network).
This is due to other pc's on the network looking for the old pc name.

I think it will effect cookies though

No, it will not. Cookies are domain-specific, not client-specific.

I wouldn't use single letters though. It might get confusing with drive
letters.

Then this is driving me nuts; one of my machines is using my real name in cookies; (e-mail address removed) now robxxx is the name of that machine so I assumed it was creating cookies as a result of the machine name? - so how do I change my dookie cookie names?

Not critcal merely annoying.

....and I won't ever name a machine 'localhost' again!

The "identifier" for the cookie is the user name of the "user" that was logged on when the site was
visited / the cookie was created.
That's why when you look at the cookies in the "Cookie" folder you will see username@soandso

You mean logged on my local machine/network? Hmmmm never paid attention to that, I think I use Family Logon or something...ah it doesn't matter...I gotta revamp this entire network soon anyway. Thanks!

The name prefixed to a cookie is the machine name you see in network neighborhood, under network
identification.

I'll remember that when I redo this network...I'll name the machines something goofy.
