computer & monitor

I'm not sure if this is XP specific, but my operating system is XP and I
never had anything like this happen to me before on any other Windows
operating system.
I was at my desktop, and the system started shutting down. The shut down
got hung up, so I pushed the reset button, and the system started to reboot
(I never got back to my desktop), and hanging up, again I pushed the reset
button. One of the times I pushed the reset button, I heard 3 error beeps (1
long 2 short). I looked the beep error up, and the documentation indicated
it might be the graphics/video card. I checked with the person I got the pc
from to find out how old the card is, and was told it is only a couple of
years old.
End result now the system won't reboot, and it seems as though there's no
connection between the CPU and the monitor.
I want to do as much trouble shooting as possible, before invest in a new
graphics/video card.
Please Help

Can you boot into safe Mode?.
If so look in the event viewer for error messages and also that confirm your
doubts if it the Video cards or something else?.
Does the Power supply is okay, it could be overheating issue did you notice
lately your computer overheated or got hot?.
HTH.

Nass,
Thanks for your speedy reply.
No, I can't, the monitor screen only shows the screen saver. Also, I think
I forgot to mention I can't turn the CPU off, I have to unplug it.

Do you mean a black screen like the screen saver or one you set previously?.
So what happen when you press the Power Button on the Case and Start it, can
you get anywhere?.

As I mentioned does the power light comes on the case when you try to power
ON?.
HTH.
Let us know

Sorry I wasn't clear. The monitor screen is black background with I think
the standard / non descript Windows screen saver. The light on the monitor
is green when I first start (plug in the CPU) and then turns amber.
The CPU's power light comes on and there is also a yellow light that is lit
(but since I can't power down normally, I'm unplugging the CPU). When I push
the power button the only thing I can hear are the fans.
You previously asked if the computer is overheating, and I would have to say
no. I probably only had the computer on for 1/2 hour and there are 4 cooling
fans in the case.

Well sandy, I will take it to the Local Prof technician shop and let them
deal with it, it seems to me may be more than a Video card. It could be an
infections, bad HDD, RAM..etc.
HTH.

Nass,
Thanks very much for your help, although it isn't the kind of reply I was
hoping for.
-- Again Thanks for taking the time to try to help.

Hi sandy,
Sorry for the bad news but it is something should be done, I really don't
want to waste your time and you will get frustrated with it and you may be
make it worse.
So, bottom line if you can't fix it don't try to fix, you will make worse
than it is.
Good luck.

First thing I'd check to see if you've accidentally unseated the display-card
in its slot.

Hi Ian,
Thanks for your suggestion, but that was the first thing I tried to no
avail. I tried to check if the fan on the display card was running, but when
I took the cover off, the CPU shut down. I'm trying to find someone who has
a display card I can borrow, so I can verify that is the problem.
