When a presentation that has sound and animation the sound suddenly
"crackles" and the computer locks up completely. Mouse has no effect. Screen
changes to funny colours. The only way out is to switch off and start
again. This same problem occurs on more than one presentation. Any ideas?

Have you consider try using another computer+monitor?

Thanks Rino, no at the moment I have not tried that but a colleague has said that my monitor might be on the "way out"

Powerpoint 2003 do not know about "service packs?" Windows xp again do not
know about "service packs?"

Service packs = updates. You should check to make certain both Office and
Windows have all updates installed.
