Computer "lags" with new installation of RAM.

The info on that is a bit strange. The laptop uses AMD processors,
and the memory controller is inside the processor. A competing brand
of laptop using the same processor (TK-53), advertises a 2x2GB limit.
All the rest of the Vostro laptops (>1000 model number), seem to
support 2x2GB. I don't understand where the technical limitation is.
I'm not up on all the various form factors for memory, and assume this is
a
standard sized SODIMM and not one of those miniature ones.
I agree the available Dell info says 1GB per slot max, but
don't understand the reason for it.

Since the press release for multiple Vostro's came out at the same
time, and the capacity limits were noted in that press release, it is
an intentional limitation and not an accident. But with the memory
controller inside the processor, I don't see the why of it. All
machines should have the same limit, when using the same AMD
processor. If the processor was Intel (where the chipset drives the RAM),
then different
behaviors are easier to understand.

TBH I've seen so many odd things with Dell computers over the years, nothing
surprises me any more.

Alright. Booted to knoppix 5.1.1 and noticed no lagging in text. I
also put in a disc into the computer and the lag was still present.
Sill at a loss for ideas...

If you do control-alt-delete and bring up Task Manager, do
any of the processes suddenly "spike" in either the percentages
or on the performance chart ? You aren't likely to catch it
that way, but you might get lucky. Try typing, and then watching
the Task Manager.

Yeah, I've tried doing that and nothing jumps whenever it pauses.

Yeah, I've tried doing that and nothing jumps whenever it pauses.

You could try a couple of other things:

1) Boot into safe mode and see if it still happens.

2) click start>>run and type msconfig and then click startup tab and
disable the whole lot of the startup group. Then reboot and see if you
get the same problem. If not, then something in startup is causing the
lag.

BIG BREAKTHROUGH!

After testing the laptop in battery and on AC, I've learned that it
only does the text hiccup whenever I'm using the battery. What could
possibly be causing this?

I've also booted into knoppix while on battery power and it types
fine. I can't find anything out of place when I run process explorer.

The battery?
The battery probably should provide nice clean power.

Try What's Running freeware http://tinyurl.com/ck4j7

It shows what programs and processes are running and how much CPU is used by
each in real time. You may get lucky and find the offending software.

Then that is the "Power Management" policy. The laptop tries to save
more power when running on battery. But it should still be smooth
though. It could be that your laptop is missing a patch.

Read the following thread *carefully* . Go through the whole thread,
to read feedback from users who have installed stuff. Apparently
it is common for WinXP installs to not have all the patches and
CPU drivers etc.

You need to ask yourself what kind of man is it that for years
espoused venom all across USENET believing he is an Internet
policeman. He has killed off group after group. Here is the answer:

1. He is the kind of man who tried to hide behind an alias because he
was not man enough to say who he was.

2. He was tracked down because he tried to sell a computer several
years ago (in total violation of his own belief that you should not
sell on USENET) using his e-mail address lshaping @hotmail.com. From
the ad, it became apparent he is Mark Orrin Bender, living at 509
Frost, San Antonio, TX 78201. MARK ORRIN BENDER DOB:01/22/1957 PHONE:

3. Being a legitimate business person involved in the computer
industry the past 24 years I decided to have a background check run on
him due to his vicious lies and innuendo. The background check found
that this brave man who now says he can defend himself against me has
a history of two arrests for domestic violence. I guess he thinks
beating up helpless domestic partners qualifies him as a tough guy.
The arrest records and civil records are below my name.

4. In the case of MAX WHITMAN & HARRIET WHITMAN he was sued into
poverty and is now living in a depressed neighborhood. His neighbors
call him El Gatero Loco, the Crazy Cat Man as he wanders the
neighborhood feeding stray cats.

Mark Orrin Bender, what a man!!!!!

Sounds like some goofy Windows power-saving "feature". Try going into
the power management setup and disable any special handling on battery
power.

possibly be causing this?

windows power savings is messing with you - i have the same machine with the
same upgrade and it did the same thing. vista or xp? the speed of the cpu
drops and the screen dims when on battery power as part of the power
management scheme by default. it wasn't noticable so much under xp, but
then on a whim and a dare i installed vista ultimate on that machine and
even with all of the drivers in place you still see it bouncing around from
time to time even on a/c power. lesson learned - check the power scheme

power options - you will have to make it think it is on a/c power all the
time - it will considerably lower your batter life though. turn off all of
the savings features and the cpu will start to think it is plugged in all
the time. it worked on this one - and in vista, you have to tell it maximum
performance or that particular machine will do the same thing!
