Computer keeps shutting down by itself

I have been fixing a friends computer which managed to get a bunch of
spyware/hijack s'ware on it. I have run Spybot S&D, AdAware and then needed
to use Hijack this to get rid of a process which was hijacking the
browser/home page etc ... this was all good. The problem is that my friend
had someone else try to fix also and in doing so has installed about three
different antivirus runtime programs. I think this is what is causing the
machine to lock up. Sometimes it will only bootup in safe mode. I have
uninstalled AVG in safe mode, and another program, but it will not allow me
to uninstall Norton Antivirus in safe mode.
Does my analysis of what is causing these problems sound correct?
Any ideas on a better way to tackle this problem would be appreciated.
Thanks

More on this ......

It appears that it has Zone Alarm installed on it. I have also just
installed XP Sp2. I see some threads which suggest that this may be causing
problems.
..... It won't boot up at all now! ... except in "safe mode"
