computer keeps asking to restart

EVERYTIME I either restart my computer or turn it off and then on, it says
that I need to restart my computer. This has been going on for about 4-6
months now, whether or not I have downloaded a new program or not. It is
really annoying. Help?

Please post the complete and exact text of the message you are seeing.
Also tell us what appears in the title bar of the window that displays
the message. (The title bar is the solid, typically blue bar that
appears on top of the window.)

The exact wording shows up in a brown box on my desktop, as soon as my
computer turns on. It says "The computer must be restarted before updating
can continue. Would you like to restart now?" This appears everytime,
whether I have trried downloading something or not.
Thanks

Thank you for helping. Ok, a bunch of stuff shows up under the startup tab.
What am I looking for?

I guess that is the problem. Since it happened such a long time ago, I don't
know what I downloaded that caused this. I think it might have just been a
windows update, but I don't know.

You don't recall what software is installed on the computer? (The Start
menu can be very helpful for this purpose.) If so, you need to sit down
with a professional technician, someone who can see and use your
computer. That person will identify the items in the startup list and
match them with the software that is installed on the computer.

AutoRuns for Windows
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx

Under the Logon tab, right-click any AutoRun Entry, in the drop-down menu
you can click 'Search Online...' for pertinent information about the
particular entry/item.
AutoRun is very safe to use. Unchecking (disabling start-up program)
entries can easily be reversed by 'checking' the box again.
Uncheck items on-by-one and reboot in between.

Good luck :)
