\\computer is not accessible.....

I keep getting this damned message about a new PC that I added to my local
LAN in the same workgroup. I shared its C drive (as I need to poke at it
from time to time) but I cannot bring up its shares.

All I get is...

"\\computername is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if
you have access permissions.

Access is denied."

These are 2 XP Pro PCs with full updates and in the same workgroup. I have
tried simple file sharing and permissions based sharing with "everybody". I
have removed all antivirus and antispyware apps except for NOD32 - which I
use on almost 200 PCs without issue.

I have installed all available protocols and rebooted with no success. I
have renamed the PC I am trying to share. I have unshared and reshared the
C drive.

I share PCs all the time. I have never had an issue like this, and I am
out of ideas at this point.

Has anyone had this problems and solved it? If so, how?

Do you have passwords set on the user accounts or are you letting it auto
login with no password? You will need identical user accounts with
identical usernames and passwords on both machines to be able to access over
the network.

I'm having a similar situation.

Computer A: WinXP SP2. In network neghborhood shows A, B, C. Click
on C and get "\\C not accessible." Click on B and can navigate to
shared folders and files on B. Can ping B but not C. IP address is
192.168.0.3

Computer B: Win2000. In network neighborhood shows A, B, C. Click on
C and get "\\C not accessible Runs WinProxy, the only access to the
Internet. Allows A, B, C to surf with no issues. Can ping B and A,
but not C. IP address is 192.168.0.1

Computer C: Vista. In network shows only itself, C. Will not show A
or B. Able to surf Internet through B. Cannot access any shared
items on A or B. Computer C is a new Dell computer. IP address is
192.168.0.2. Can't ping A. Successfully pings B but not C (itself).
Can't ping A. File Sharing is turned on. One user and guest account.
I tried a static IP on C with no results. C can not surf using a
static local IP address.

I see your problem....Vista. Drop it like a bad of wet, dead rats.

I had a similar problem with a Vista laptop and had to use a Vista login to
access it's stuff. It also REQUIRED me to use a login on each XP Pro PC
that it connected to.

Vista.....pffffffftttttt!

No passwords. I am setting the share to allow everyone access.
Won't work. For P2P networking, if you machines to share then they
must all have identical user accounts with identical, non-blank
passwords, all on the same workgroup. Otherwise you run into proglems
like yours.

You were given good advice - follow it.

Good advice? I've set up over 400 XP Pro PCs to do sharing. This problem
has popped up maybe 5 or 6 times. Never have found a reason for it. I was
just hoping someone here knew what Microsoft has screwed up that makes this
error occur with such inconsistency.

Recently, a new Vista machine was added to the LAN. It can surf
through a Win2000 machine. But none of the machines can share with
the Vista PC. I added identical accounts with passwords as suggested
here. That made NO difference. I'm open to other suggestions, but
replacing Vista with XP (as much as I'd like to) is not an option.

Are you an IT Professional? Ask your peers for answers!
In all of your 400 XP Pro boxes, did you have identical user accounts with
identical non-blank passwords?

It was an antivirus application (NOD32) that I have used exclusively for the
past 2 years on all PCs that I have set up.

I still have no clue why NOD32 hosed this PC, but I am looking into it.

Solved! The new Vista machine came with Symantec Norton Internet
Security (a "free" 30-day trial). I uninstalled Norton and all the
LAN troubles went away.

Yes. And not intuitive at all. I'll stick with Zonealarm. After a
7-day struggle, no more Norton products for me.

Unfortunately, I've seen Norton cause problems for many. Where is Peter
Norton when we need him? Take a look at Comodo Personal Firewall too.
It's free and was highly rated some time back.
