Computer incredibly SLOW

Hi!

My system is running incredibly slow any suggestions would be
appreciated. I have Intel Celeron 800 MHz processor on Intel 815
chipset with 256 MB SDRAM running WinXP with 256Kbps Cable Internet
(Realtek RTL8139D PCI Ethernet Adapter). I have latest virus
defination files of Norton Antivirus and this is the only one major
application running in the background. It boots slow. On shutdown and
logging off profiles, it takes a very long time than normal. I have
also run CHKDSK and Defrag.

There are two instances of SVCHOST.EXE in the SYSTEM section. I don't
know why is it duplicated. There are other processes that I do not
have any clue. Can some of the processes be disabled safely without
affecting the system functionality? and how? or is there any other
suggestion to increase the overall performance of the PC?

I am listing all the processess running in the background below. I
would be happy to provide any other information that you may require.
Please help.

Could try disabling the Ad-watch from loading at startup eg from within
Adaware (or by using the information from msconfig)

Having multiple instances of svchost.exe is normal and nothing to worry
about

Not personally familiar with Norton Antivirus, but you could perhaps disable
a few unnecessary options, from within that program, since it seems to have
a large number of connected programs starting up. Others who use the
product will be able to better advise on that though.

Other than Norton and Adwatch starting up it looks pretty clean.

It could very well be Norton. It is s resource hog.You might want to
try a different anti-virus program.Have you run any anti-spyware
programs on your computer? If not get SpyBot and run it.

Thank you everybody for the help.

I have also noticed that the mouse movement sometimes are little
wiered, it does no function the way it should, it stucks at some place
as if the comp is working on something. Sometimes the mouse stop
working but I can operate the comp using keyboard and I shut it down,
after startup everything is normal

Some more questions

How do you disable norton from within the program and how do you
re-enable it back?

Referring to the link http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/slowcom.htm, I am
little worried about the CWShredder & doxdesk.com, is it legit? who
made it?

Where do I check updates for CDShredder and Spybot?

If you have SpyBot installed just click on the button for
Updates.CWShredder is used to remove the Cool Search tool bar and all
its related crap.
