XP Pro stops loading during logon

My system is an HP Pavilion, 2.2ghz P4, 1gb SDDRAM, nVidia GeForceT3 w/128mb
ram, Intel Pro 10/100 Nic, Firewire, running Windows XP Professional. When I
boot it up I cannot get it to complete the logon. Everything is fine until I
put in my username and password, then it shows the welcome screen but as soon
as it loads the desktop wallpaper everything stops. The cursor is there and
moves, but nothing else happens. This happens regardless of whichever profile
I try to use. The only thing I can do is ctrl-alt-del to bring up task
manager and it shows a few processes running, but I can't start a new
process. If I try to browse to an executable program it says "THIS FILE DOES
NOT HAVE A PROGRAM ASSOCIATED WITH IT FOR PERFORMING THIS ACTION. CREATE AN
ASSOCIATION IN THE FOLDER OPTIONS CONTROL PANEL."

I have went through all the choices available at F8-the only one that works
is Safe Mode w/Command line. I can run most all DOS commands and even start
some programs. I have ran some of the anti-spyware programs from the command
line and they found and (supposedly) cleaned the system, but that hasn't made
any difference either. I have also ran my anti-virus program from DOS, but
it shows everything ok.

I have also ran the HP System Recovery utility (non-destructive) and it had
no effect either. I thought about re-installing XP completely, but it came
preloaded on my system so I don't have the CDs.

Please help!!!!!! I am just about at my wits end. I have another computer
I have been using to access the internet trying to figure out what to do, but
it is old and slow and I need access to the programs and data I have on my
HP. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you,
Marcia

Hi,

Explorer.exe is missing. This generally has to do with display drivers. If
you have recently done so or ran the MS updates to do so, try a rollback via
the Device Manager. If this is not the case, use Ctrl/Alt/Delete and end
process on Explorer.exe if it is listed and either way, then go to File/New
Task (Run) and type in: Explorer.exe.

Explorer.exe repeatedly quits unexpectedly in Windows XP

Kelly,
Your suggestion makes sense, except that I can't get the system to load that
far. It stops loading between putting the wallpaper on the screen and
putting the desktop icons on it. No taskbar, no systray, no start menu - no
Control Panel. When I tried to run explorer.exe from the run command, I got
the following message: "THIS FILE DOES NOT HAVE A PROGRAM ASSOCIATED WITH IT
FOR PERFORMING THIS ACTION. CREATE AN ASSOCIATION IN THE FOLDER OPTIONS
CONTROL PANEL."
