Computer hangs on startup

Whenever I power up my PC running XP Home it hangs (black screen) right after
displaying the OEM splash screen but before the windows logo screen. I have
to manually shutdown the system and cold restart. I get the "Windows did not
start correctly" text screen on the re-start, but otherwise it starts up OK
and the PC is usable. Next day, same sequence.

I've run anti-virus, replaced the ntdetect file(s) from the recovery
console. Is this a boot sector problem or Windows? What should be my next
step? My data is backed up.

Did you just install the Feb 8th critical updates? I'm running XP Pro and
just selected the updates... and now I'm seeing the same problems. I loop on
boot, it does the same thing in safe mode. Stupid "critical updates" !!

This problem started before that update.
