Computer freezing up - not responding

Hello,
We have a user running Windows XP on a Dell Laptop. He
has reported that his computer has recently
started "locking up" (sometimes 2 to 3 times in a day)
when opening both Word and Excel Documents. Once locked
the only solution is to reboot. He is then having great
difficulty turning the computer off and must resort to
unplugging the computer and pulling the battery out to
reboot. The user reported that he has installed the
automatic updates for Windows XP and has installed McAfee
VirusScan Security Suite version 7.0. At this point I am
not sure if this is a Windows XP problem or a VirusScan
problem (we do have other users running both without any
problems).
Any help and suggetions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!!

We use McAfee at our organ ization and we haven't any issues

1) Read the event logs and goto www.eventid.net for help
2) What apps did they install?
3) Any spyware installed? Try Ad-Aware from lavasoft
4) Reinstall Office (Repair mode doesn't seem to ever really work)
