If this is an Athlon processor then it is a known issue
and simply requires three entries be added in your
registry. If this happens at other times when you aren't
playing games then I found the culprit to be Roxio Easy CD
Creator.(I had an older OEM version that the cheap SOBs
wouldn't update). If you need the reg tweaks e:mail me.
They fixed my problem with GTA and Quake and so on. Have
fun.

To "The Unknown P" - Please quote some of the original post to which you
are replying. What "known issue" with Athlons? What "three registry
entries"? I don't think so. Yes, early Athlons were more easily prone
to overheating, and you do need to be sure to use a proper heatsink/fan
combo with Athlons, but this is purely hardware and has nothing to do
with the operating system, so registry entries would be useless.
Current Athlons run relatively cooler, but still must be properly
cooled, as with any fast processor. To the OP - it sounds like you are
having an overheating problem or your RAM is dodgy. Random intermittent
failures are usually because of bad hardware, and so I wouldn't expect
anything you did from within Windows to have much effect. Here are some
generic hardware troubleshooting steps:

1) open the computer and run it open, cleaning out all dust bunnies and
observing all fans (overheating will cause system freezing); 2) test
the RAM - I like Memtest86 from www.memtest86.com - let the test run
for an extended (like overnight) period of time - unless errors are
seen immediately; 3) test the hard drive with a diagnostic utility from
the mftr.; 4) test the motherboard. In your case, be sure your video
card isn't overheating. You may want to swap out video cards for
testing purposes. Since you didn't say what card you have, more
specific advice is impossible to give. If you can't do this testing
yourself, take the machine to a good local computer repair shop (not a
CompUSA or Best Buy type of store).
