My computer stops responding when I click on links in emails or interne
sites.
This is most annoying when trying to confirm something ie registratio
to this site.
Is there anyway I can stop this. I am a novice 60 year old so plai
english please!

Hi Neil,
Yes I scan daily for spyware, adware and viruses. I have emptied Temp
Internet folders and removed pop up blockers but it still happens.
Thanks for your reply

Are you running SP2 or SP3 and what internet explorer version do you have, 6
or 7. It all helps to try and get an idea of what he problem may be. When
did it stop working.? Could you do a system restore to a date prior to the
problem.?
You could also check this setting to see if it helps. Go to internet
explorer properties and the advanced tab, then under browsing if there's a
tick in "enable third party browser extension" click the box to remove the
tick and click OK. Restart the browser and see if it changes the problem, if
not go back and put the tick back in the box. (click the box) Also what do
you use to read your emails.?

Just another thought, try running internet explorer without add ons. To do
this go from the start button to "all programs", "accessories", "system
tools" in that menu there should be "Internet Explorer (No add ons)" open
internet explorer using this shortcut and try a link that previously failed
& let us know the result.

Hi Neil
I have today upgraded to SP3 to see if that helps.
I tried a system restore but I got a message saying that the restore
had failed? It started playing up a couple of months ago and has been
driving me crazy.
I think it is IE6 and I use Outlook express to read emails.
I have unclicked the 3rd party browser extension so will see what
happens.
Will let you know if the problem has been solved.
Many Thanks
Barbara

Don't forget to try running without "add ons" as per my other post, extract
below just in case.

"system

internet explorer using this shortcut and try a link that previously failed
& let us know the result.

best of luck

Hi Neil,
Have run IE from accessories without add ons and all still seems fine.
I am so grateful. Thanks for your help.
A great site will pass it on to some of my 'oldie' friends.
Thanks again

Hi,
Not finished yet I fear. If all is well running internet explorer "without
add-ons" then that means there is something loaded , perhaps a toolbar that
is preventing running internet explorer in full mode. (without add ons is
like a safemode) You need to look at the add-ons loaded, to do this with
internet explorer (using normal mode & not without add-ons)open click on
tools then manage add-ons. Then select "enable or disable Add-ons" and look
at the list, one of those is causing the problem. You can select one at a
time, and disable it to see which is causing the error.

See how you go on.

Hi Neil,
Just need to recap;
I.IE 3rd party browser extensions off - works ok
2. IE opened without add ons and 3rd party b.extensions off - works.
3. IE opened without add ons and 3rd party b.extensions on - does Not
work

When I switched off the 3rd party extension at 1. it took of the Yahoo
toolbar and the norton phisher protection. Put windows phisher
protection on and all seemed ok.
Thinking back I think the problem started round about the time I
upgraded to Norton 2008 Security.
I will work through the add ons as you suggest. Can you confirm that
this is with the 3rd party browser extensions switched back on.

If it works ok with 3rd party extensions off then you need to experiment
with that back on and disabling add-ons one at a time.
I misunderstood originally, I thought the problem cleared when you used IE
without add-ons & didn't realise you still had 3rd party extensions turned
off. Work through them in some logical sequence, one of the settings (could
be either add-ons with or without 3rd party extensions that's causing it)
I'm sure you'll crack it now you have some idea where to look. You could
also try uninstalling the yahoo toolbar if it is in add/remove programs, but
it may have been installed along with some other software.
Let me know.

Hi Neil,
Well I don't know what I have done BUT
IE is running smoothly. 3rd party browser extensions are ON. All Add
Ons are ON. I have obviously clicked something on or off and something
has changed.
Been onto sites that would normally have crashed with no problem.
Fingers crossed that this continues. If not I now have enough knowledge
(I hope) to play about and get it to reset again.
Thank you so much for your help.
