COMPUTER FREEZE AFTER INSTALLING XP PROFESSIONAL

DEAR GROUP:

I have a 98 PC.

I reformatted the whole C Drive and installed XP Home Edition. Immediately
after that, I upgraded to XP Professional. Everything is fine up to this
point.

The problem: When I want to install my Modem CD in order to connect to the
Internet, the computer freezes. I cannot perform CTR-ALT-DEL. I have to
turn off PC from the Tower Button.

Can you tell me what is wrong?

Chris, because a "'98 PC" is always an object of suspicion with respect to
Windows XP, would you please plst your computer specs?
Let's eliminate the machine as a cause of your woes.

If the modem came with the Win98 computer there are NO modem drivers on the
modem install CD that are Windows XP compatible. Get the correct drivers
from the manufacturer.

You need to install these right after installing XP:

1) Motherboard chipset drivers
2) Video card drivers
3) Anti-Virus utility
4) Firewall

As another poster pointed out. The drivers for your modem on the
windows 98 drivers disk are most likely not compatible with Windows
XP.

Like the other poster pointed out ... get updated drivers from the
manufacturer.

However I've often seen, that there is none .... the manufacturer
doesn't support XP for this old modem, the manufacturer doesn't exist
any more.

In all cases I could install the default drivers and the modem worked
..... some features didn't work (like turning up and down the sound) -
the I could use the modem.

What Modem Are you using?
Brand?
Model?

Try going back to W98 for a while Download the driver for XP
thru W98 download. The save to an external drive or make a
partition using fdisk in W98 from dos. Should be at least 1
GiG.Check how much space your documents is taking up and add
the 1GB to that, to allow for downloads from web as install
packages. Then copy all documents to that partition as the
"documents backup area. Then reformat using XP install to
NTFS, and install XP to your new C drive, which will be
smaller than the maximum size of the physical drive.
