Computer does not know it has a CD/ROM drive

I have a IBM ThinkPad R40 running Windows XP with Service Pack 2. I
am having problems with the CD/DVD drive (LG GCC-4240N-IMCO A1).

Here is what happened. I was trying to watch a movie and the movie/
computer crashed (computer no longer responded to commands). I
powered down the computer. Ever since then the CD/DVD drive has not
worked. By not work, I mean that it is not present in "My Computer".
I first tried to re-install the drivers but this did not change the
situation. Upon rebooting the computer I went to the Bios screen and
I noticed that the computer no longer recognized the presence of the
drive. I know the drive itself is okay because it works when I put
the drive into an identical IBM ThinkPad R40. (Conversely, when I put
the CD/ROM drive from the indentical IBM ThinkPad R40 into my computer
it does not work).

So I searched online to try to find a way to fix the situation but all
I could come up with is to run a firmware update but was not sure if
this is my only option.

Any suggestions?

Hello,

If the drive is not listed in the BIOS, then nothing in Windows is
going to fix that. In the BIOS, is the drive even listed in the boot
order options? Is it listed anywhere? If you start the computer with a
bootable CD (e.g. a Windows CD) is it recognized? If the answer to all
of these is "No", then since the drive itself is OK, there's a
hardware problem with your board or the drive cable. Suggest you take
it to a shop and have them check it out.

Already answered...it's the computer since 2 obviously functioning
drives are not working with it. The lack of identification in bios
indicates a bad cable and/or connector.
