Computer Disabled/Installation Problem

My Gateway G6-350 (350Mhz)PC has been disabled after
upgrading to Internet Explorer 6.0 using the MS Service
Pack 1 CD sent to me by Microsoft.

The installation appeared to go well but when the computer
rebooted all I got on the screen was my background
picture. No task bar, no icons, no start menu.I can access
the Task Manager, but only three files show up in the Task
Manager window (Wmexe, Explorer, Rundll32). I can start
the computer in "safe mode" and fix the problem if someone
can tell me how to fix it. But in "safe mode" the computer
is hobbled, having no Internet access, use of my CD drive
or lots of other features.

I'm running Windows 98.

Kevin,
Have you contacted Gateway to see if you needed a specific
OEM SP1, instead of using the retail version?
