Computer Browser and other services not starting

B

Bitstreams

We have a customer running an SBS (Small Business Server) 2003 network
and a problem has arisen on a number (but not all) of the
workstations.

There are a number of services not starting although they are set to
Automatic startup. Cheif amongst these is Computer Browser, and
because it doesn't start the users cannot access mapped drives. If I
start it manually then the problem goes away.

The event log shows only one error - from WMI with code 7032.

I have managed to get one machine out of the problem with a system
restore (suggesting updates or viral activity) but the others refuse
to be cured. I have also had reports of similar but temporary problems
on 2 other sites.

Anybody heard anything?

Simon,

How many computers in the network, and is this a domain or workgroup? Which
computers (how many computers) are you force starting the browser on?

Is NetBT started consistently on all computers? Is it started automatically,
and if so, is a DHCP server on the network? Are all personal firewalls properly
tuned?
