computer being used to send out email

Steve

I keep getting messages that emails have failed. When I
look at the details of the message it shows that my
computer sent out an email to someone, sometimes from my
address book and sometimes to an unknown person. There
are subject lines I don't know about and sender names I
dont recognize. Any ideas about whats going on and what I
can do?

Can't help much. My computer has been doing the same and
it died down a week or so after I installed a personal
firewall. I suspect that a mass mailer has hijacked the
address and is sending e-mails on it. The failed e-mails
come back to my machine.

This is most likely your email address that is being
"borrowed" - not your computer, and not your email
account - just the address.
There is very little that can be done about it.
For example, someone who has your address in their
address book becomes infected. What can you do ?

New virus's like SWEN.A will select a name at random from an infected
systems address book to insert into the "From:" field of e-mail it sends
out. So, While you may not be infected, someone with your address in
thier book has been. Thus, It looks like the e-mail came from you and you
get any bounce backs.

Unfortuneatly, there isn't anthing you can do about it since it isn't
you that is sending thr e-mails.
