Excel 2003 and Excel 2007 are both fully supported on Vista. See:

Description of the versions of Office that are supported on Windows Vista
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932087

There can be some compatibility problems with other non-Office
applications. But there's no general guideline: we'd really need to know
which apps you plan to run, to give you advice.

Or, check the website of the manufacturer of the specific software you're
wondering about. Many software vendors have released updates to their apps
to make them run better on Vista.

Hope it helps,

1. Vista does not come with any office products, if you have Excel now
but no installation media don't expect to find it, or any other office
products on your machine. There may be a "Trial" version installed by
the laptop vendor but note the word "Trial". Of course you can install
Open Office or another similar product, that will handle Excel files and
other office files and is free, It works fine on Vista.

2. You may find that a laptop with Vista works slower than the same
laptop with XP, that's because Vista prefers more memory and uses much
more hard drive space. This of course is a laptop with the same memory
and chips, not just the same "Model" with less memory.

3. The default settings for saving files in Vista are different than
those in XP if you use Microsoft Office, but these can be changed.
Perhaps this is what you heard? If you don;t change these default file
settings it's true that an Excel file you just "Save" in Vista and mail
to someone with XP won;t be readable, but you only need to change your
Excel preference for saving to .xls and the other users should have no
trouble reading them. Even a non Microsoft program should be able to
read them.
