Concerning Windows Vista SP1

Paniolo

I am in the process of replacing my current PC (with Windows XP) for a new
upgraded PC with Windows Vista. My concern is that all my old software in my
current PC (with XP) may not be compatible with Windows Vista.

But I am told Microsoft has come out with Vista SP1 that should take care
of all compatibility. Is this true?

Has anyone had any problem with Windows Compatibility in installing old
software from XP into Vista?

As was the case when Windows XP was released you will find that many/most
programs run fine, some run with hiccups and others will not run at all.

If you do not want to spend the time to list the programs you are concerned
about, to see if others have been successful in using them, you will have to
install each and every one on your computer and find out for yourself!

No, the purpose of SP1 is *not* to "take care of all compatibility".
Since Vista was released, many software publishers have provided updates to
their current products to make them Vista-compatible, in addition to all the
publishers who were proactive during the beta test period and had
Vista-compatible editions ready at launch.

None of this mitigates the problems you may well have with "old software".

Have you tried the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor?

No it is nearly the oposite, less program works with Service Pack 1 for
Vista (http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;935796&x=16&y=9),
this service pack improve network/file copy and a lot of other things such
as Windows Server 2008 compability.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsvista/aa905078.aspx - Here you can
read about Microsoft Application Compability Toolkit (for advanced users)
and about Microsoft Assessment and Planning Tool (For companies) and for
Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor (for home user or small companies)
I suggest you download Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor and run it on your XP
machine and you will get a very nice report what will work and what will not
work and what will work if you tweak the system or patch the program a bit
etc..

The majority of programs on the 'not working' list will be completely
unknown to most users..

No, you were told wrong. Compatibility with older programs is, and
always will be, a potential issue with every new operating system, and
with every update to that operating system.

I have personally had almost no such problems at all. Every program I
had installed under Windows XP run without a problem under Vista,
except for two very minor utilities I could live without. I had lots
of installed programs, and I didn't even have to run anything under
compatibility mode.

That's not to say that all your programs will work. Although, unless
your programs are very old, compatibility problems are fairly rare,
there are some programs that will not work under Vista. To find out,
download and run the free Microsoft Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor at
