compaq presario 7478 will not recognize cd drive so cannot install

Trying to install XP but cannot read cd rom drive. Hard disk is reformatted
and I only have win98 boot disk. How do I get PC to recognize cd drive to
intall XP or re-install Win98? I can install either program if it will
recognize cd rom.

I can not locate a compaq presario 7478 on the XP Hardware Compatability
List, so I do not believe it will run XP at this point. To reinstall 98,
bootdisk,com or other reputible places on the web should have an self
extracting boot disk maker. Boot from the 98 boot disk and then place your
CD in the drive and run setup.exe.
