compacting mail error

Everytime my windows mail tries to compact messages,I get an error
message.....folder is currently in use by windows mail or another program.why
does this happen,is there a way to make it compact. thanks

oh yeah i have vista system
 
This is typically a symptom caused by a non-compatible antivirus.
Which antivirus are you running?
 
We don't have many reports on Avira, possibly because it is
relatively new, and isn't very popular yet.
The only way you can rule out Avira as the culprit is to uninstall it.
You can always reinstall if there is no improvement.

Do you use any other third party security software, like anti-spyware?
Webroot Spy Sweeper (among others) has also caused problems with
Windows Mail.
 
i use ad aware spybot and windows defender.

Windows Defender is fine. I'm not sure about Spybot.
All you can do is uninstall Avira and Spybot one at a time, reboot each
time, then check Windows Mail for improvement after each uninstall/reboot.

Open the mail program, goto Tools>Options>Advanced tab>Maintenance button
and click the Compact button
