Well...I'm back again with another question-since my
virtual memeory trouble started about 2 weeks or so ago,
I've visited this board many times. I seem to have the
virtual memory thing fixed, but there are other numerous
problems. I have a home network..which worked perfectly
until a few days into this disaster. Then I couldn't logon
the net. The modem is working fine, or I wouldn't be
here. I'm using the other pc. I tried connecting the
modem directly to my pc and still nothing. I have to shut
off the ssdp to make the taskbar work-probably a minor
problem...with ssdp off or on the connection still doesn't
work. Any ideas or suggestions? I simply hate the idea
of taking this in, when I think with the right guidance I
can save some money. Thank you!!!

How do you get Internet connectivity on the machine ?
Wireless, Wired Ethernet, ICS...You didn't post enough
information to work from.

If this machine has "numerous" problems, you may have
to take it to a technician who can resolve all the issues for
your. Trust me, there is a point where the following is true

"Aggravation is more expensive than money."

All someone needed to do was tell me-I'm not sure what the
correct answer is though. It's not wireless-I'm using a
Netgear Ethernet hub. The modem is a Direcway satellite
connection. It's working fine. When I connected it
directly to my pc I couldn't connect.

I agree with the quote, but I'm a life veteran-I've
endured 31 years of marriage and have 2 adult children and
both my parents are still living-And if I don't know how
to cope with aggrevation, I need to jump ship.

I will exhaust all websites and ask as many questions as
need be. If you don't ask you don't learn.

As far as the numerous problems, I've managed to run down
a few.....And this site has been extremely helpful! Thank
you

O.K., If it's a Ethernet connection then you need to check it's
IP configuration. Start, Run, (type) command. In the box type
Ipconfig/all. If the IP address starts with 169, then it's not
getting an IP assignment from the Router. You need to also
check and see if your original Local Area Connection is still
present or a new one has been created. Open Network
Connections and see if the current Local Area Connection is
identified with a number (LAC 1, or LAC 2). I'm assuming
that your Network uses DHCP. Post back with results and
I'll see if we can help diagnose it further.

Yes, I understand your point, I've been married for 27 years
(to the same woman) , both parents still with us and a son in
college. Excuse my original post if it sounded condescending.
I've been posting on a number of groups today and it is sometimes
hard to keep your disposition after 20-30 fairly long answers.

I'll do everything as directed!
It didn't sound condescending-I was chuckling!I've often
wondered how all of you wonderful helpers keep your sanity-
here we come! The pc ignorant! We don't know the right
words-you can't understand us and we can't understand
you! And we might even live in the same town--It has to
be like talking to children.... One of the problems I've
been having is not knowing the right question to ask...The
whole thing is a magilla!

Thank you for your patience-Linda

Well-my Run command didn't like that one little bit-
Ipconfig/all could not be found.. The mystery thickens..

The Local area network is LAC 2

The IP address on the support page of the LAC 2 does start
with 169

Are we getting anywhere?

Yep, Windows remembers every Network card installed into it.
Each one has it's own settings. I'm assuming that your original
configuration used Local Area Connection (No Number). It
appears that a new instance of the NIC is present. Because of
this it may not be configured correctly.
By the way the IPconfig/all command must be run from a command
prompt. To do that click Start, then click Run in the run box type
Command (Press Enter) A Dos window opens, you click inside
that (To give it what is called Focus), then from there you type
Ipconfig/All (Press Enter).
What we (you) are going to have to do is configure your LAC
NIC settings to get it to use DHCP.
Open Network Connections, Right Click Local Area Connection 2.
A context menu will appear, Left click Properties. When the box
opens left click "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" one time to highlight.
(Turns blue), then Click the Properties button below and to the
Right.
When the General box opens we need to change the following.
Click the radio button "Use the Following IP address", then click
in the IP Address box and enter 192.168.1.200
Subnet Mask box type 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.1.1
Click the radio button "Use the following DNS Server Addresses"
Preferred DNS Server 192.168.1.1
Click Apply, then OK, Ok & Close Network Connections
Reboot PC and see if Network Connectivity Returns.
This assumes that your Router uses 192.168.1.1 - 192.168.1.254
as it address range.

I did all that and still no interent-I checked the
properties and the numbers were still there and I triple
checked! They are correct.

I did the command thingy and the Ipconfig popped up just
like you said it would! (see-learn new stuff all the time!)
The numbers you gave me are there, but the Dhcp enabled
says no...

Click Start, then Click Run, in the box type Command
When the Dos box opens, click in it and then type
Ping 192.168.1.1
If the Network card can communicate with your router,
then all three packs should be acknowledged. If it says
100% loss then the PC cannot connect to the router, so
it becomes more complicated as there is no connection
from your PC through the NIC/Ethernet cable back to
the router.

Also can you post the Vendor/Model # of your router.

Okay-100% loss

kept say request timed out.
The router:
Netgear
4 port
10 base-t
Ethernet Hub
model EN 104 tp

What next?

So it's a Hub and not a router - that changes the diagnostics
a bit. The settings I gave you earlier were for use with a
Router.

Is your setup like this - Modem connects to the HUB
and then each PC is tapped from the Hub ?

Can you go to the other PC, and do the IPconfig/ALL and
jot down the TCP/IP data for the working system.

So, see how much I know...sheeesh...

I did what you said, now I'm getting an erreo message-
windows-systen error-there is an ip address conflict with
another system on the network.

I've triple checked and the numbers are the same.

They should have different IP Addresses, the only
common settings are Subnet mask, DNS Server &
Gateway. The machine that connects to the Internet
is the one that we need the IPConfig data from. By
using it's addressing we can figure out how to setup
the non-working PC.

Okay-IP address: 192.168.0.4 subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway:192.168.0.1

Modify the Local Area Connections 2, as before but
enter IP address as 192.168.0.3 subnet mask 255.255.255.0
and Gateway 192.168.0.1. Reboot and recheck your
Internet connection.

Made all the changes, rebooted and still no internet.
It's strange-there's a network icon on the taskbar that
says-Local area Connection 2-Speed 10.0 mbps That icon
has never been there before.

That is normal, Each LAC can have a taskbar icon that shows
both Inbounds/Outbound traffic. You might try a Ping again &
see if you can send/receive packets to 192.168.0.1. If you
double-click that taskbar icon it will expand to show sent &
received packets. I'll check back in the morning to see how
things are.

Results:
Reply from 192.168.03: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128

It said that 4 times

Ping statistics for ***
Packets: Sent =4, Recieved =4, Lost=0 <0% loss>
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum =0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms

The taskbar icon says Sent 299 Recieved 0

My teams losing....
Thank you so very much!!!!!! I hope I wasn't too taxing.
I'm actually quite intelligent and can beat everyone at
video games...even the youngsters....and I'm 50!!!
