how do I boot to a command prompt on a laptop running winxp but I have no
floppy drive so i cannot put a boot disk in. F8 only gives me the option to
boot in safe mode with command prompt, I want to be able to boot to a cmd
prompt straight away.

With XP, Safe Mode with Command Prompt is the option that you want.

[[choose the Safe Mode with Command Prompt option, which is exactly the same
as safe mode except that a command prompt is started instead of the
graphical user interface.]]

[[This option is the same as Safe mode, except that Cmd.exe starts instead
of Windows Explorer.]]
