Do you mean that ffdshow clears up the problem?

No, I mean I've seen "Com surrogate" error that was detected by "Problem
Reports and Solutions" as caused by fddshow.

This error with Divx seems to be cleared up using the latest Divx update to
codec version 6.5 fixes the issue, but it also seems to remove the
thumbnails. Some versions of Nero have caused this error and it can be
resolved in that case by removing their filters.

The filter NeVideo.ax either needs to be renamed or removed, and it's found
at C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\DSFilter.

This error has also been seen when the Explorer generates a preview for
Video files.

Thanks, I installed nero recently and only have xvid installed, so I imagine
it's Nero, I've removed that file, so hopefully it wont happen anymore.

Hi,

Thanks, I installed nero recently and only have xvid installed, so I imagine
it's Nero, I've removed that file, so hopefully it wont happen anymore.

IF the problem is caused by Nero, upgrading to version 7.7.5.1 solves
it.

Kind regards,
Mark Veldhuis.

I hate the whole rundll/COM surrogate issue in Windows. It represents one
of the often-exploited security holes in Windows because it can be used to
mask the program really running or really accessing the Internet. Its
existence in Vista means Microsoft still hasn't done a good job with
security.

Every time I start Vista, I get a request from Microsoft Windows Live
OneCare for rundll.exe COM surrogate to access the Internet. In other
computers running XP I have SunBelt software's anti-spyware which is
constantly asking about allowing rundll.exe to run. In any of these type of
cases, 90% or more of users would never be able to identify what program is
actually running under the guise of rundll.exe.
