COM ports supported

Newbie question - need a WIN2000 PC to talk to 4 tills via COM ports so
intend to install 2 x PCI double Serial port cards. I also need to attach a
UPS to this box and it communicates via a COM port. Total now 5 COM ports.
Will this work? Someone has told me only 4 ports will be supported under
WIN2000. I can't seem to find the answer on the MS site.
TIA

Windows NT/2000 supports 256 COM ports (95/98 does support 128
COM ports).
Not all COM ports are allways true serial RS232 ports, your IR
port is usually allso assigned as virtual COM port.

Open your device manager and select a serial port. Select properties
and then Port Settings. Go to "Advanced" and look for the COM
settings. You will see there are COM1 to COM256.

Look into
http://www.softio.com/map950pci8port16950+dualquadplexcables.htm
as an example. Your hardware and your software has to match.
I doubt if you are able to add 5 serial ports by just adding more
adapters (but haven't tested it yet).
